KOLYA's Story:
We will be Pilots! Kolya’s story…..
Kolya, full name Nikolai Andreyevitch Mosenko, was born in the small village of Baryshivka, Zhitomir region, Ukraine.
He grew up a country lad, and spent time working at the local Kholkoz
(Collective farm). One day, an old U2 biplane circled the field in which Kolya was working, he took off his torn old shirt and waved it frantically above his head……To his immense joy, the pilot of the biplane rocked his wings in response! Kolya’s life was changed forever, he KNEW what he wanted to be. He read every book about aviation he could find in the Zhitomir town library, and on his days off, he would watch planes at the local airfield. He soon joined the “OSOAVIAKHIM” organisation, and here through sheer determination he qualified for basic flight training.
The dastardly attack on our beloved Motherland led Kolya’s flying career in a new direction….flying training at the Kiev Military District airfield.
Kolya had a talent for low-level flying, he was not afraid of heights, but watching roofs and telegraph poles whizzing by seemed so much more FUN! If he could deal out destruction to the hated invaders at the same time, so much the better!
Kolya’s control-tower flybys became the subject of betting…..
Once Kolya finished his training, he had the good luck to be assigned to the 69th GIAP, a unit whose reputation was legendary (Among the local drinking establishments, anyway)
Here he was also able to indulge his passion for singing and music.
His morale-raising concerts became popular…..
The singing-lessons amused everybody!
Kolya became Kommandir Eskadrillya (K/E) of the GShAP section of the 69th and his “trademark” was a music score on the side of his aircraft.
