Ml. Leyt BOOS and Kadet GUGAL under the watchful eye of Starshina REDVO, who on mission 24 of Kiev, Engaged two enemy 109's without any fighter cover, defended expertly well against two enemy Me109's. All pilots maintained calm and followed defensive orders allowing BOOS to destroy one Me109 by blasting him to hell. KADET Gugal although shot up & with partial aircraft controlles, dragged the other Me109 for the rest of the flight and from his gunners position managed to smoke the enemies engine causing him to break away and be destroyed.

For this glorious deed Ml Leyt BOOS and KADET GUGAL (post mortem) are each awarded the Voroshilov Marksman Badge, 2nd Level.

BOOS's Story:

Boos grew up in the Kingdom of Sweden where the wasps stings without mercy. Growing up he lived nearby an airfield which hosted the Swedish air force. His free time was spent standing by the fence around the airfield looking at all the aeroplanes taking off, landing, and flying inverted.
So it was to no one’s surprise when he decided to join the air force at nineteen years of age. Not long after he joined, there were rumours flying around the barracks that there was a war brewing. Boos got terrified, what if they started rationing, what would happen to his baked potatoes?! Boos immediately started searching for ways to speed up his training so he could get out of Sweden and to somewhere safe, like Iceland. The talk was that Great Britain was going to invade and gain control over the Baltic Sea. His fondness for Tea almost made him stay but after many hours of talking to himself about it he decided that he wanted to see geysers more than tea and crumpets. One way to speed up his training was to skip navigation training, our hero felt confident that he would be able to follow the compass to his destination without further training. What he didn’t know was that the ground crew had picked a bad time to pull a prank on him; they painted the compass black and rewrote the four cardinal points. Let’s just say he didn’t expect to land out of fuel in Leningrad.

After sending a few words of written text home to “congratulate” mentioned ground crew on their successful prank and apologize to his senior officers that he had stolen an aircraft, he decided to find the local liquor consuming center, in that LLCC there was a recruiter from the VVS . After getting promised bags of potatoes and a crash course in the Russian language he signed up and had a toast.

The next thing he remembers is waking up in a moving truck, turning his head to look over the side he just manages to see what it says on a sign the truck is roaring past. “69th Gv IAP Barracks; any toothbrushes will be confiscated” Of course at the time, he didn’t know this and was very sad to see his toothbrush go, either to high ranking officers or latrine duties. He was very disappointed after getting told that there were no bags of potatoes waiting for him. But after having a look at the oh so professionally folded parachutes he was sure this was the place for him!
