Alexej - was born as Aljosha Baatarsaikhan Ochir at Kyakhta, a little border town southeast of Irkutsk in the late 1910s. The exact date is unknown.
His uncle Delgernandjil lived about 100km away in the south - the northern border of Mongolia - was his big idol as he was one of the finest horse riders in the area.
Being the son of a Sheppard there was not much for him to do apart from taking care of the families sheep, goats and horses. Which although not boring, was everyday the same.
Alexej was growing up & began to learn from his uncle how to race the horses, but the speed wasn't enough for him, he wanted more!
Soon he became aware of the first motorcycles, crazy, unstable fast things with brakes that didn’t work half the time…but he loved them! Then the Russo-Japanese War broke out in 1938, that’s where he saw his first aircraft & they looked fast & dangerous!
Fascinated by the pure speed of this gracious iron birds he took part in a Soviet VVS voluntary program which offered him the opportunity to learn to fly...
...and of course, a lifelong bound to the military, which was written in very small letters on the other side of the contract that nobody reads.
Alexej was not a very good learner, nor a natural gifted pilot. He crashed three I-15s and a new I-16, before he was banned from going anywhere near any fighter aircraft.
Thanks to a good contact, a female officer of the NVKD Alexej was transferred to a punishment ‘Penal Squad’ named =69.PIAP= The XO of this squadron was a shortsighted, deaf in one ear crazy Cossack, who could barely read or write & always stunk off Vodka. He quickly mistook the "P" for penal for a "G" for Guards - which explains, that the =69.GIAP= is not listed in official soviet documents.
Thanks to his good contacts with the NVKD officer, who also had very good contacts in higher places, Alexej was placed as KE (Komandir Eskadrillya–Squadron Commander) for the new to be formed Bomber (Gbap) Section, as no one else had the appetite nor intention to fly in this boring slow aircraft, high above the enemy skies and dropping bombs with pinpoint accuracy on our enemies infrastructure & specific targets.
Here he was given a sturdy aircraft, heavily loaded with bombs, lots of tables & charts and a bombsight, which he found easy to use. This new job in the VVS was as easy & as boring as taking care of the families sheep’s and since no one else wanted to fly with him Alexej invented some tricks. First of all he ordered only females as gunners.... soon the reputation of this "love bombers" spread around the VVS and Myata, a former Military musician, quickly volunteered to teach all these new recruits ‘how to press all those buttons & levers’ in the right order!
Beside’s Alexej, Myata was the first officer within the =69.PBAP= - and together they invented other freaky things. One was called "Dive bombing" instead of staying high above the clouds & horizontal, they now began to fly vertical and deliver their bombs with a hellish speed diving down through the heavens- and as Alexej & Myata love the feeling of ‘speed’ and all those yelling girls stuck behind in the bomber, it wasn't hard to convince other members of the squadron to be their wingmen.
First members of the =69.PBAP= were Myata, Pavel, Tooz and of course Alexej himself.
